Turbine times

Well what a beautiful day for flying.  A Saturday, no wind, sunny weather and a turbine heli!  A member of the club I fly at has been building one for several months and today was the maiden voyage.  Here are a few pictures:

It goes without saying that it sounded fabulous and you could almost say it was an anti-climax.  I’m just glad it didn’t go in – not cheap those engines..

For those who are interested the heli is T-Rex 700 with a Wren 744 jet turbine in it.

The start procedure is automated, you just move the throttle and the jet begins it’s start up procedure. This involves burning propane until the turbine is hot enough.   Once the ecu detects that the right temperature is reached it starts pumping in the paraffin.  Idle is 135,000 rpm!

Proper 3D running speed is 175,000 rpm and apprantly according to the turbine manafacture it’s limit is 195,000 rpm.   Not bad you have to say. I won’t say how much it is but feel free to guess.
